What is "First Step"?

First Step is a FREE English conversation learning site for young children by Japanese Americans living in Los Angeles, USA

Targeting ages from 5 to 8

Infants up to about 8 years old are still language flexible. Let them get used to English first.

100% Online Tutoring

Lessons are online via Skype or Zoom.  It would be helpful if you could be accompanied by a guardian and feel free to join us at home

Completely Free Lesson

Because it is run by volunteers, there is no lesson fee. Please feel free to contact us.

HOW IT WORKS

Please let us know name, age and gender of your child, desired date and time, etc. Due to the time difference, we may not be able to accommodate all of your request, but we will adjust the date and time.

Features

Familiar Topics

We won’t focus on the details such as grammar. That can be done later. We will focus on what is familiar to your kids and translate those into English.

Phonics

Phonics works by breaking each word up into it’s individual sounds before blending those sounds back together to make the word.  Children learn to ‘decode’ words by breaking it down into sounds rather than having to memorize 1,000’s of words individually. Your kids can learn phonics in our lesson.

Sight Words

The sight words are a collection of words that a child should learn to recognize without sounding out the letters. The sight words are both common, frequently used words and foundational words that a child can use to build a vocabulary. Combining sight words with

Short Lesson

A small child cannot concentrate for a long time. Therefore, the lesson is limited to about 25 minutes each. Having a joy with English is a key to continue the lessons.
